UFO Robo Grendizer by Gosaku Ota

Our newest project, another collaboration between Dynamic Pro Scanlations, HappyScans! and Hokuto no Gun. This time its the final entry in Gosaku Ota's Mazinger trilogy - UFO Robo Grendizer. In case you didn't know, Gosaku Ota is the third major member of Dynamic Productions. He, Ishikawa and Nagai all worked on various manga together that have become classics today.

Now, before anyone points out that we haven't even done Ota's Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger yet, hear this: This is a commissioned project by one of the readers, the very same person who commissioned Nagai's version of the Grendizer manga in the past (he is awesome and has my eternal thanks for making these Grendizer projects possible). Therefore, we're doing as he requested! Hopefully we'll be able to do the other parts of the trilogy in the future.

  1. I just downloaded it and extracted it with no problems.

  2. The Gosaku Ota version is the one that was translated in France and Belgium. If you guys are familiar only with the Nagai/Ishikawa manga or the animated series, you're in for a serious rollercoaster ride. You're not going to believe how incredibly different from the other versions this is. When you read the end, to use the current vernacular, you'll shit a brick. It's mind-boggling. I actually envy you for discovering it now.

  3. I noticed you haven't posted this and the finale of Getter Robo G on /m/. Not that it's a problem, I'm just curious what's behind it. I hope it's not some drama or a ban.

  4. It's because the threads just flop off the board in record time (like most release threads that aren't toku related) and I'm left to bumping my own threads with images.

Frankly, it's demotivating so I just stopped posting there altogether. It's a very different place from the board that helped spawn this blog back in 2008.

I think people fail to realize that comments, even ones that just say a simple "thank you", are one of the biggest driving factors of getting subbers/scanlators to continue working on their projects. When your newest release lacks feedback, and thus perceived interest, you don't really feel motivated to work on the next release when it comes down to sacrificing your free time and money for no real gain. There's been plenty of times over the years where I just wanted to stop doing this altogether as it really is a massive time-sink and interferes with my daily life.

I'm amazed that I'm even still doing this. Honestly, it's mainly because of donators who put money forth that I feel obligated to continue this because I don't want to betray their trust in me. I don't want to seem like an attention whore, but that's my feelings on the subject.

Hmm. That came out longer than I anticipated.

  5. I don't think it's about people not appreciating it, lots of people appreciate it, but yeah, I always thought a simple "thank you" or "cool chapter" comment is too small to be worth posting, so if nothing in particular comes to mind to discuss, I just end up not saying anything.

  7. Wou are awesome! You really are trying to scanlate the lot of it, aren't you? I am impressed,

It sounds like you have so many projects, i am curious, any plans for Groizer X?

  8. No plans for Groizer X at the moment. But now that I think about it, I've never even checked out the Groizer X manga. I should rectify this in the near future.

  9. This is certainly going to be an interesting ride. Apart from an episode here and a SRW clip there, Grendizer is probably one of the Dynamic robots that I've been the least exposed to so I'm looking forward to getting more familiar with its story in this manga.

I'm only wondering if Koji's going to get back into Mazinger at some point. I always felt that it was a major downgrade for him to go from Z to the TFO.

Thanks a whole bunch for your continued awesome work by the way.

--Nope, not in this version. He does use MZ in the Nagai/Ishikawa, but it's a a different timeline or something. In Gosaku Ota's "Mazinverse" (he also did his own take on Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger), both Mazingers are destroyed beyond the possibility of ever being rebuilt.
