Amon: The Darkside of The Devilman by Yu Kinutani and Go Nagai

Today's release is from a new translator, OtherSideofSky. His debut scanlation series is one that ties into the Devilman manga universe, Amon: The Darkside of The Devilman. This work received an OVA in the form of Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman.

All credit goes to OtherSideofSky, who is translating and typesetting it all by himself. Enjoy, and expect more releases from him in the future!

  1. Actually, Darkside and Apocalypse have nothing to do with one another as far as I can see. Sure, the plot is similar. Both deviate from the established Devilman story post-Miki's death by having Akira be overcome by Amon, the demon taking full control and seeking vengeance against Satan for using him. What differs is the style and execution. Amon in Darkside is a coming storm, a force of destruction that threatens to warp and destroy the world. He approaches his task with a stoic singlemindedness. What will happen when he obtains his goal is a mystery. Amon in Apocalypse is a brutal beast; Devilman without his humanity. Though powerfull, this Amon is only a threat in his menace and malevolence. He draws active pleasure in combat and destruction. His plan on dealing with Satan would've probably amounted to little more than a simple beatdown.
Not to meantion the art-styles are like night and day. Darkside is an H.R. Geiger Lovecraftian nightmare. Apocalypse... well... Just listen to Rob Zombie's "Devilman"... yeah that probably sums it up nicely.
Okay, that rant out of my system. So... yeah, more Devilman. Nice.

(Why has Dynamic Pro not done a new anime of this yet? I think its been long enough. I want some new Devilman Anime B**ch!)

Apocalypse of Devilman is a (very) loose adaptation of this Amon manga, and both projects were started around the same time.

This is a common theme in most Dynamic Pro manga to anime/OVA adaptions. Usually, the animated work is almost completely different from the source material, only sharing some very basic premise.

No, these are just the first three chapters. It's a six volume manga.

  5. I'm not sure if the translation of the preview picture here is correct at all...

It says 勝負だサタン, even the other group that scanlated the first few chapters of the first volumes (who did a really crappy job in general to boot) translated it as "satan's victory" rather than what it really is, a challenge towards him.

I don't know, it kinda leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and kinda calls the general translation quality into question here...
