Our newest project, another collaboration between Dynamic Pro Scanlations, HappyScans! and Hokuto no Gun. This time its the final entry in Gosaku Ota's Mazinger trilogy - UFO Robo Grendizer. In case you didn't know, Gosaku Ota is the third major member of Dynamic Productions. He, Ishikawa and Nagai all worked on various manga together that have become classics today.

Now, before anyone points out that we haven't even done Ota's Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger yet, hear this: This is a commissioned project by one of the readers, the very same person who commissioned Nagai's version of the Grendizer manga in the past (he is awesome and has my eternal thanks for making these Grendizer projects possible). Therefore, we're doing as he requested! Hopefully we'll be able to do the other parts of the trilogy in the future.

With this post, the only main Getter Robo series left untranslated is the final story of the saga - Getter Robo Arc. I'd like to thank OtherSideofSky for stepping up and translating this part of the series in his usual speedy manner.

When I started on this journey in 2008, the only translated Getter Robo manga was the first volume of the first series. Many were familiar with the OVA/TV releases but had little to no knowledge of the manga that influenced a whole generation of creators and fans in Japan. I decided to get this great series translated, but due to the difficulty of finding willing translators, I had to scanlate Getter Robo in an out of order manner; The first series we released was Shin Getter Robo because it was the shortest, thus the easiest to find a translator for. Then I found translators to help me with Getter Robo Go because it was a relatively unknown part of the saga, yet probably the most pivotal point in the series. I wanted to get it out of the way because translators would come and go, and I never knew if I was going to be able to get another Getter series translated.

Fortunately, we've been able to do Getter Robo and Getter Robo G since then even though I still have to deal with importing and scanning the books myself as well as trying to reel in translators with promises of money. It's truly a miracle that Getter scanlations have even gotten this far. It's all thanks to the hard work of the various translators I've had the pleasure of working with over the years and the financial support I've gotten from donators. Not to mention my stubbornness, I guess.

Anyhow, enjoy. I've got no solid date for when I'll start Getter Robo Arc, but I'll probably get to scanning it after my finals are finished.

The continuation of the massive final chapter! Not much to say without spoiling it, so let me tell you about how I went blind this week.

So there I was, typing away in photoshop, when my eyes started acting up. The stinging sensation was fairly intense, so I stopped what I was doing and tried to tend to my eyes. As time passed, the pain intensified, and it was getting harder and harder to keep my eyes open.

Long agony short, I couldn't open my eyes for about two days and any amount of light caused severe pain. I went to an optician as soon as I could. Turns out, my contacts had some buildup on them due to their age, and had severely irritated my upper cornea in each eye. Luckily, the condition was temporary and I just needed to give my eyes some rest. Instead of doing that, I completed this chapter.

Wow! With this volume, Devilman Lady truly feels like the successor to Devilman as the two plots are now completely intertwined. I've really got to hand it to Nagai for making Dante's Divine Comedy the in-canon basis for this story.

Also, the release of this volume means we're about halfway done with the series. Everyone, be sure to give many, many thanks to OtherSideofSky. He came out of seemingly nowhere, translated all of Amon in an unheard of amount of time (and completed Devilman vs Getter Robo at the same time just because) and has now burned through half of Devilman Lady in three months! This is the beginning of Getter Robo G's final chapter. I'm releasing this chapter in three separate parts because not only is it over 200 pages in length, but every page is crammed with text and there are two page spreads everywhere.

Not surprisingly, this "chapter" was originally published as multiple interconnected chapters - which explains the overall length. I apologize for not releasing it all at one time, but this single chapter is nearly as long as the four previous chapters combined - it really does make up nearly half of the entire book.

Getter Robo G and the Future of Getter Robo Scanlations

Man, it sure was difficult getting this released. But, it's finally here! Many, many thanks to OtherSideofSky for translating this and a shout out to Wright for checking over the work.

Getter Robo G consists of 5 chapters, and I'll release one per week. Now, with that out of the way, I'd like to talk about future Getter Robo projects; namely Getter Robo Arc.

Aside from Shin Getter Robo, I have had to personally pay for the translation of each Getter Robo series due to the scarcity of translators. This has cost me about $250 in all (not counting the fees for actually buying the books), and now that total has jumped up to $350 with the translation of Getter Robo G. So what am I getting at? Well, this: ~~I need donations.~~ ~~Getter Robo Arc, at this rate, will not be released unless I can scrounge up another $100 that I don't have.~~

You may be thinking, "Oh, I don't have the money to spare!"
Well, I know that feeling, because I'm completely broke from spending all of my free money on this stuff. But consider this: thousands of people download these releases (that's just mediafire links. I'm not even counting everyone who reads it on sites like mangafox or get it from alternative download links/torrents) so if just a small portion of readers donated anywhere from $2 to $5, paying for the translation is easy. I'm not asking for a high dollar value, I'm just asking for a lot of people to chip in a very small amount of money. Basically, we need to spirit bomb these translation fees.

Now, there have been those of you that have donated in the past. Thank you! This message is not for you - you've done your part and I fully appreciate all the help I've gotten financially for these projects. Once again, thank you. You're the reason that the Getter scanlations have even gotten this far.

I've tried my hardest to bring everyone these great comics by Dynamic Pro for nearly 4 years now, and I'm asking you - those who get to enjoy these releases - to help me help you. Remember this - Getter Robo G was delayed so long because of translator and financial difficulties.

Presenting Go Nagai's Devilman Lady volume 2! The first volume of this work was translated way back in 2008 by SaHa, I believe. It's a fairly graphic manga featuring lots of nudity and rape, so beware.

Let me say a few words about this project. Firstly, volume 2 (and soon, volume 3) of Devilman Lady, translated by Farah (translator of Neptise Scans), is a joint project between Dynamic Pro Scanlations and Happy-Scans! Volume 4 onward will be translated by OtherSideofSky who will also do a majority of the editing, while I'll continue to do the two page spreads and Wright will clean. Come October, I'll be taking over the typesetting for OtherSideofSky for as long as he needs me to.

Another post dedicated to OtherSideofSky's Amon chapter releases. This time, we're starting off with the beginning of the end, chapter 1 of Amon volume 6. OtherSideofSky has a bit to say about an aspect of the translation:

A note on Cadney's name: While it is usually written in katakana (カドネ), Prof. Rainuma sometimes uses kanji. They are 門 and 音, which mean "gate" and "sound" respectively. When combined, they become 闇, which means "darkness". I spell it "Cadney" because it's usually written in katakana and "cagney" was the closest non-Japanese name I could find.

Sorry, still no Getter Robo G release. Apparently, Damage shall restart his translation efforts sometime next month. I apologize for the wait. Great Mazinger shall be released when the entire volume is completed, as per the translator's instructions.

Also, I'm looking for Japanese to English translators. I want to release more Dynamic Pro manga and speed up the translations of current projects. Working for free is a plus, but I'm also quite willing to pay.

Moving on to other news...

I'm happy to announce two new projects.

First is Gekiman, which shall be done as a joint with Project Bite Me! Scanlations. They will be providing the scans and translation, while I typeset. So really, I'm just along for the ride. If you haven't done it already, go check out their work. They're translating Violence Jack and Enma-kun, among other great manga.

The other project is Getter Robo Bible. First, I just want to say that this will be an untranslated release. I bought the book a while back for personal enjoyment, and I've decided to scan it and release it as is due to fan demand. It's a very text heavy book, but there are tons of great pictures and concept sketches. If we're lucky, maybe it'll pique the interest of a translator (if so, contact me and I'll typeset). Probably not. But anyway, look forward to that!

How's 2011 going for everyone?

As you've probably noticed, we haven't released anything new in a little bit. I've actually got the first three chapters (out of five total chapters) of Getter G scanned and ready to be translated. But, our illustrious translator Damage is in the busy process of moving, so the translation work has yet to begin. Great Mazinger is going steady, but I'm also waiting for a new group member to finish some editing work on that. So basically, here I am, sitting on my hands, unable to speed up any part of the process.

So, please bear with us. Once Getter G starts its release, it's going to be very quick since the volume is pretty much scanned and ready to go. As always, I'm steadily working on the saga version of Shin Getter Robo. If no Getter G/Great Mazigner releases happen anytime soon, I'll just fall back on that and release the one or two chapters of Shin Getter I have sitting around just to show that we're alive.

Thanks for understanding, and prepare yourself for Getter G! Ishikawa added an entirely new chapter devoted to Brai's origin (which ties in to later Getter Robo Saga) and completely redrew the final battle (which is about 100 pages of pure action!).

Shin Getter Robo - Encounter with the Unknown

Today, I'm releasing the first new chapter in Shin Getter Robo.

It's called "Encounter with the Unknown". Some of you may notice that this chapter was adapted in the OVA, New Getter Robo.
I thought I'd release Shin Getter Robo as one complete volume, but I figured since I have some of the new material done, I might as well release it. Included with this new chapter are redone versions of the first two chapters, "Getter Robo vs Getter Robo G" and "A New Conflict". The quality difference between this and the old release is worlds apart.

I'll talk a bit about the other new material exclusive to this edition of Shin Getter Robo.

The second new chapter, called "Crater Battle" is actually just an extra story at the end of the book. It takes place during the Moon Wars that was the prequel to the OVA Shin Getter Robo Armageddon (Known in Japan as "Shin (Change!) Getter Robo: The Last Day of the World"). It obviously has no bearing on the manga story, but it's a fun read. Translation for it is complete, and I'll start the scanning process probably tomorrow or Monday.

The rest of the new content takes the form of additions and alterations to the original Shin Getter chapters. There's over 30 pages of new stuff! It mostly concerns Getter Emperor's scenes.

In this volume, the page numbering got thrown off at 41 in the raws, and I didn't realize early enough to feel like correcting it. No pages are missing.

Took longer than anticipated due to a number of factors on my part. Anyhow, let me fill you all in on what's going on around here.

I've been very, very busy with my (real!) editing job. I'm on a project right now that's going to last months, so things are gonna be sloooooow. But fear not, for I'll never drop my projects, despite disappearing for months at a time.

Project status updates:

Getter Robo: Another long ass chapter. In fact, the first part is 100 pages, and the second part is about as long. I've got a bit done of the first part. This is going to be my next release.

Majuu Sensen OVAs: Starseeker says its still on. So we'll get it eventually, once both she and I have some more free time.

Well, anyway, you've been warned. Things are going slow, but I'm going to try and pick up the pace. This month has been brutal for me in terms of work, and it's going to stay that way for the rest of February.

The Demonic Beast (War) Front

Hey, been a while.

I've been doing [insert list of excuses] and haven't released anything in a while. But, releases shall be forthcoming shortly.

Anyway, during this time I've tracked down LD rips of the original Majuu Sensen (The official English title is "The Demonic Beast Front" as seen on the Action Comics manga edition) OVA, which was made in about 1990. I uploaded them and shared them on /m/(and someone else spread them to Garada), so I figure I'll post the links here, also.

Good news about that whole thing, also. Starseeker, our glorious translator for the Mazinger manga and a slew of mecha anime, said she would like to translate these 3 OVA episodes once xmas break hits. So, that'll be another joint project. Dynamic Pro Scanlations is stepping into the world of fansubbing, eh?

Anyway, take these OVAs, sit on your hands and wait for our next release. It should be soon.

The Calm Before the (Spin) Storm

Sorry, no releases this time around. I've been working my ass off, but nothing is ready for release quite yet.

Currently working on Mazinger Z volume 3 up to 50 pages shy of being complete. So once I catch up to about 175 on editing, and then get the translation for and edit the last 50 pages, we'll have a release. It's almost there.

This week marks the first week of Getter Robo volume 2 translations. Damage is currently working on the double length 1st chapter, and once we have that out, we'll start doing week by week chapter releases of the original Getter Robo.

So, things have been building up for a while on all fronts, and it'll soon be ready to burst into tangible releases. Bare with us for just a little bit longer.

On another note, do you all remember the "Terror of the Two Demons" chapter from the UFO Robo Grendizer manga? It seems Go Nagai did not write nor draw that chapter, but good ol' Ken Ishikawa did. Interesting. One has to wonder what his other contributions were in various Dynamic Pro manga.

Hey all, figure I'd just give a bit of news on the scanlation war front.

Mazinger Z: Got the first script for volume 3, covers the first 25 pages. 26-50 is in the translation checking process. Due to Starseeker's wishes, we'll be doing a full volume release.

Getter Robo: Anthology is scanned, working on Getter Robo Saga 1. If translation takes too long for Anthology, I'll just release the raw to hold everyone over until it gets done.

In other news, I almost got eaten by alligators. Being stuck in a gator infested lake (read: with a flipped boat) for half an hour sucks. That was almost the end of Dynamic Pro Scanlations right there. Fucking Dinosaur Empire.

This story comes from the very last volume of Getter Robo Āḥ and is translated by good ol' C-K (Who translated Shin Getter Robo and UFO Robo Grendizer). He's also translating Getter Robo Āḥ, so that's great news! A million thanks to him.

Funnily enough, I got the script for this the weekend Shin Mazinger adapted this story. The design of Mazinger Z in Shin Mazinger is based off of this work, which is cool, since Ishikawa's deisgn is great.

Well, there's a second Getter Robo series down. It's also the longest one.
Now, I'm going to focus on Mazinger Z. I don't have any new translations yet from Starseeker, but I guess I'll start cleaning the next volume tomorrow.

On the topic of the other Getter Robo series:
The last two series I need to do are Getter Robo and Getter Robo Āḥ. But here's the thing, I need to get the Getter Robo Saga editions.

Let me tell you what Getter Robo Saga is: Getter Robo Saga is the final edition of the manga. Ishikawa went back and redrew some parts, corrected the story here and there and even did an entirely new ending to Getter Robo G. Many parts of Shin Getter were altered, a part of Go was changed, and the ending of Āḥ was altered.

Unfortunately, only the very first volume has been scanned, which means I need to personally scan the rest of them. Also, I don't have a dedicated translator right now. Lionel popped in and translated a little bit randomly, but I need someone who is more consistent. I have someone like that, but unfortunately and understandably, he doesn't work for free. You all know I'm willing to spend my own money and hours of my free time to bring you manga, but I can only do so much. Frankly, I've tried to avoid asking for money for the longest time. But Getter Robo Go cost me $120 and Tatari $50 in addition to the standard, time consuming work that goes into scanlating. So, I'm asking you, if you want to see these works in English, please help by donating. I need to purchase the volumes of Getter Robo Saga and help pay the translation. If you can spare any money, please consider helping me. I've already had a kind soul donate some money and I'm infinitely grateful. Any amount will do.

Halfway through volume 6, eh? Volume 7 is the final volume, so we're coming to the end of the road here, folks.

So, what's after that? Well...I've been ignoring Cutey Honey for the longest time. So I need to get on that. But also, I've been working with someone called Starseeker. Maybe you've seen her around /m/ or /m/subs. She released an episode of Reideen recently. Anyway, we've been working on....*drumroll*...Mazinger Z! She's already translated a bunch of it, and I've edited 50 pages of Volume 1 and 100 pages of volume 2 (I'm the slow one here. Don't ask why we've got more of volume 2 done than volume 1. A deal with some people dropped out and that's when I came in to edit for Starseeker.)

Also, after we're done with Getter Robo Go, I'm going to see if good ol' Damage wants to continue our partnership. I figure I'll offer to hire him for translating the original Getter Robo and Getter Robo Āḥ. Hopefully, he likes money as much as I like Getter Robo.

Next chapter for Getter Robo Go? Next week, if I get the translation by then.

Alright, this is a important time in our scanlation. The French edition ends at volume 5, and this is where we would translate from Japanese for volumes 6 and 7. Except our translator for 6 and 7 was unable to actually translate anything. Very luckily, we have an alternative: a native Japanese speaker (whom Tatari and I will be paying for volume 6 and 7's translation.) So, we'll be setting up everything with him, and he'll get to work once that's done.

It may take a little while, so don't expect a chapter next week.

CDisplay

So, my two page spreads have been having a bit of a problem with CDisplay. I decided to check into this problem and discovered that CDisplay will not correctly display any image created in Photoshop with a transparent background.

To fix this, I've gone through each spread I've released and added white backgrounds. All of these should display properly in CDisplay. Just replace the old files with the new files from these:
